This work focuses on the process of swallowing.

Swallowing involves three main stages:

  1. Oral Phase: Food is chewed and mixed with saliva to form a bolus. The tongue then pushes the bolus to the back of the mouth.

  2. Pharyngeal Phase: The swallowing reflex is triggered. The soft palate rises to block the nasal passage, and the epiglottis covers the larynx to prevent aspiration. The bolus is pushed into the esophagus.

  3. Esophageal Phase: The bolus moves down the esophagus via peristaltic contractions and passes through the lower esophageal sphincter into the stomach. The sphincter then closes to prevent backflow.
